Resultados preliminares de los efectos de = las
ondas=20 electromagn=C3=A9ticas sobre la fauna urbana =


Aves y telefon=C3=ADa m=C3=B3vil =

Durante=20 decenios multitud de seres vivos han sido utilizados por el hombre para = detectar=20 posibles alteraciones en los ecosistemas. Desde los l=C3=ADquenes, muy = sensibles a la=20 contaminaci=C3=B3n por acumular las sustancias t=C3=B3xicas en sus = tejidos, hasta las aves=20 que viven en jardines y edificios, una amplia gama de organismos han = servido=20 como indicadores de la salud del h=C3=A1bitat humano.

Desde la = segunda mitad=20 de los 90 del pasado siglo se ha instalado una tupida red de estaciones = base de=20 telefon=C3=ADa que han incrementado la contaminaci=C3=B3n = electromagn=C3=A9tica, especialmente=20 de las ciudades, hasta niveles alarmantes. El motivo de esta = afirmaci=C3=B3n radica=20 en que estas antenas lanzan microondas con una frecuencia de 900 MHz = para el=20 sistema anal=C3=B3gico (GSM) y de 1.800 MHz para el digital (DCS) = pulsadas en muy=20 bajas frecuencias.

Existen numerosos estudios cient=C3=ADficos = que alertan del=20 peligro de este tipo de radiaci=C3=B3n, que interfiere con el sistema = nervioso y=20 altera un buen n=C3=BAmero de procesos biol=C3=B3gicos, sobre la salud = humana y los seres=20 vivos (1). Algunos trabajos muestran que tambi=C3=A9n los animales = expuestos a estas=20 radiaciones pueden sufrir un deterioro de su salud en la vecindad de las = antenas=20 emisoras (2), e incluso mostrar conspicuos comportamientos aberrantes = (3).=20 Interacciones sin=C3=A9rgicas entre campos electromagn=C3=A9ticos de = diferentes=20 frecuencias han sido descritos tambi=C3=A9n a escala celular (4). = Adem=C3=A1s, algunos=20 estudios alertan de los efectos de estas ondas sobre la = reproducci=C3=B3n, como el=20 decremento de los conteos de esperma y el reducido desarrollo de los = t=C3=BAbulos en=20 los test=C3=ADculos de rata (5) o el aumento de la mortalidad de = embriones de pollo=20 (6, 7). El significativo incremento de los micron=C3=BAcleos en los = eritrocitos del=20 ganado que pasta cerca de los transmisores es indicativo del efecto = genot=C3=B3xico=20 de su exposici=C3=B3n (8). Los efectos gen=C3=A9ticos de la microondas = sobre h=C3=A1mster y=20 ratas han sido demostrados en varios estudios (9, 10, 11, 12). = Precisamente=20 aplicando estos conocidos efectos, actualmente se est=C3=A1 investigando = en Sud=C3=A1frica=20 su potencial utilizaci=C3=B3n contra el virus del SIDA.

Estos = campos de alta=20 frecuencia producen una respuesta en varios tipos de neuronas del = sistema=20 nervioso central de las aves (13), afectan a la actividad central = colin=C3=A9rgica en=20 la rata (14), y tambi=C3=A9n a su aprendizaje memor=C3=ADstico (15). = Adem=C3=A1s, numerosos=20 estudios demuestran que los campos electromagn=C3=A9ticos emitidos por = las antenas y=20 los tel=C3=A9fonos m=C3=B3viles favorecen la permeabilidad de la barrera = hematoencef=C3=A1lica=20 (16, 17, 18), facilitando la entrada de sustancias perjudiciales al = cerebro que=20 da=C3=B1an las neuronas de las ratas (19).

Durante los = =C3=BAltimos a=C3=B1os estamos=20 realizando en Valladolid una serie de estudios encaminados a obtener = informaci=C3=B3n=20 sobre lo que est=C3=A1 ocurriendo con la fauna silvestre de la ciudad, = sometida a=20 este tipo de radiaciones. Una de las dificultades intr=C3=ADnsecas a = esta=20 investigaci=C3=B3n es lograr compaginar los tiempos de exposici=C3=B3n = con la gran=20 movilidad de la fauna, lo que obliga a trabajar con especies muy = sedentarias y=20 querenciosas o bien a realizar los seguimientos en periodos de cr=C3=ADa = o dormideros=20 estacionales.

Seguimiento de = poblaciones=20 en Valladolid

Para el caso de los gorriones se = seleccionaron=20 32 puntos en la ciudad. En cada punto se realizaron censos de estos = p=C3=A1jaros y se=20 midieron los valores de contaminaci=C3=B3n electromagn=C3=A9tica = (radiofrecuencias) una=20 vez al mes, entre octubre de 2002 y abril de 2003. Analizando = conjuntamente los=20 resultados de los 12 puntos con niveles medios de intensidad de campo = m=C3=A1s=20 elevados, se ha obtenido una correlaci=C3=B3n negativa altamente = significativa=20 (Correlaci=C3=B3n de Spearman: R=3D -0.87; p<0,01)>Picus = viridis), agateador=20 com=C3=BAn (Certhia brachydactyla) y mosquitero papialbo = (Phylloscopus=20 bonelli), que suponen el 20% de las que criaron de forma permanente = durante=20 el periodo 1996-98.

Adem=C3=A1s, se constat=C3=B3 un fuerte = descenso (superior al=20 50%) en el n=C3=BAmero de parejas de siete especies (47%) y estabilidad = poblacional=20 para otras cinco (33%). Estos resultados indican que 10 de las 15 (66%) = especies=20 de aves estudiadas han sufrido un dr=C3=A1stico descenso poblacional o = han=20 desaparecido del espectro faun=C3=ADstico del Parque entre los a=C3=B1os = 1998 y=20 2002.

Se han localizado varias zonas que hemos denominado = =C3=A1reas de=20 silencio, donde criaban y se exhib=C3=ADan los machos cantores de varias = especies y=20 ya no lo hacen.

En los =C3=BAltimos a=C3=B1os se han implantado = al menos cinco=20 estaciones base, en tres ubicaciones, a unos 100 metros del Parque, que = inciden=20 directamente sobre =C3=A9l. Durante estos a=C3=B1os las = caracter=C3=ADsticas estructurales y el=20 h=C3=A1bitat del Parque no han variado y la contaminaci=C3=B3n = convencional ha disminuido=20 (el SO2 ha descendido a la mitad, el CO tambi=C3=A9n ha descendido y el = benceno ha=20 descendido a la cuarta parte, mientras que las part=C3=ADculas finas y = el di=C3=B3xido de=20 nitr=C3=B3geno se han mantenido en niveles similares).

Las=20 poblaciones de gorriones ingleses se han reducido en los =C3=BAltimos 30 = a=C3=B1os de 24=20 millones a menos de 14. El m=C3=A1s abrupto declive de esta = poblaci=C3=B3n, con un 75 % de=20 descenso, se ha producido desde 1994, coincidiendo con el desarrollo y = la=20 proliferaci=C3=B3n de la telefon=C3=ADa m=C3=B3vil. En Londres = pr=C3=A1cticamente han desaparecido=20 los gorriones, raz=C3=B3n por la que recientemente se les ha incluido en = la lista=20 roja inglesa de especies en peligro, junto al estornino pinto. En mayo = de 2002=20 nos pusimos en contacto con el BTO, que agrupa a miles de estudiosos de = las aves=20 en ese pa=C3=ADs, les enviamos algunos resultados que se presentan en = este art=C3=ADculo y=20 les advertimos de que el declive que estaban observando podr=C3=ADa = estar relacionado=20 con el aumento galopante de la contaminaci=C3=B3n electromagn=C3=A9tica, = especialmente=20 grave en el Reino Unido por ser uno de los pa=C3=ADses con niveles = legales m=C3=A1s=20 permisivos. En la actualidad la hip=C3=B3tesis electromagn=C3=A9tica ha = ganado peso entre=20 los
investigadores. De hecho 30.000 aficionados la comprobar=C3=A1n, = junto con=20 otras posibles teor=C3=ADas, durante las primaveras de 2003 y 2004 = (Rosie Cleary,=20 com. Pers.).
